Chateau de Bardouly is an exquisite manor house in the Dordogne region of France, that was recently opened up for yoga retreats and is already being hailed as one of the best venues in Europe (Elle Magazine; The Sunday Times).
Indeed, the feedback from 2017 is already so positive that we have started to plan our next trip in 2018, and are happy to announce our dates: 12th – 19th May. This was a perfect time of year for visiting the region – the sun shone and allowed for plenty of outdoor trips and swimming, without making the yoga practice unpleasantly hot!
Laura teaches with an intuitive understanding of the needs of all her students, and combines asana, pranyama and meditation practices that enable you to see with more clarity, and become more at ease and confident in yourself. She shares a deep knowledge of asana interwoven with the deeper wisdom of yoga, and teaches with warmth and humour.
Known for her attention to detail and ability to “read the body” Laura is adept at helping students to heal from aches and pains, or free up areas of restricted movement. Whether you are a beginner in your yoga journey or looking to advance your practice, Laura loves to share the practices of yoga and meditation with everyone.
Laura’s classes are usually 2 hours long, this allows time for both posture work and pranayama (breath practice) alongside mindfulness practices and deep relaxation. On retreat, the morning will invite an invigorating and dynamic session, while the evening leaves time for more restorative and recuperative practice.
Bardouly was built in the reign of Henry IV and is situated halfway up a limestone hill above the Dropt River. This Perigordian Chateau brims with the charm and nobility of its 400 years of existence.
The house maintains its original features including a panelled dining room that was installed by the same artisan that completed the state rooms at Versailles. Michel de Montaigne’s historic estate is nearby and is the place where he wrote extensively about the area and other topics in his famous ‘Essays’. Many illustrious visitors spent time at Bardouly throughout the 20th century such as Charles de Gaulle and John D Rockefeller.
The house brims with antiques but maintains the atmosphere of a comfortable family home. Enjoy the absolute privacy in the meticulously maintained house and park. The estate includes a heated swimming pool and hard surface tennis court as well as a lake surrounded by ancient oaks. For those who like to, the close to 100 acres of exquisite wooded hills and fields provide plenty of space to explore.
Chateau de Bardouly offers 9 en-suite bedrooms. They all have a unique interior design comprising a mix of modern amenities, antiques, and elegant fabrics.
The rooms are equipped with clocks, ipad/phone docking stations, armoires, chest of drawers, writing desk and comfy chairs for reading. All bath/shower rooms are fitted with blow dryers. Towels, linen and cleaning are included.
The Manor has two formal living rooms with French doors opening onto an east-facing, lime-tree shaded terrace; two informal living rooms; a family room and a games room. For dining areas, there are several options both indoors and outdoors – meals will be eaten in luxurious comfort, come rain or come shine. Meals are lovingly prepared by the Chateau’s own chef – fresh bio-dynamic farm to table food daily. They can cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free or other special dietary requirements.
The Manor’s beautiful grounds, swimming pool and exquisitely comfortable rooms provide the perfect setting for relaxing, reading a book, and allowing the stresses of working life to melt away.
For those looking for other activities to pass the time in between the two daily yoga classes, the Chateau and its surrounding area has plenty to offer, including:
Swimming, tennis, hiking, cycling
